Why Pray the Stations of the Cross?

The Lenten Season is now in full swing. Adorned in a violet hue, our churches reflect the penitential nature of Lent. The tinge of red that makes this violet distinctive from the one used in Advent, reminds us of the blood Christ shed for our salvation. While Good Friday is still several weeks away, it is important to take time to reflect on Christ’s Passion. Praying the Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent is an incredibly meaningful way to accomplish this as a school community. This practice allows us to be immersed in and renewed by all Lent has to offer us spiritually. Through participation, it offers us a profound opportunity to accompany Jesus as he carries his cross and triumphs over death through his resurrection.

Why do I believe this practice is so essential for our classrooms? Let’s explore together.

Connecting to the Faith

First and foremost, praying the Stations of the Cross provides a tangible way for students to connect with the core teachings of our faith. Through prayerful reflection, students’ senses and imagination are engaged. They are invited into the narrative of Jesus’ Passion. In doing so, their understanding of his sacrifice and the boundless love that led him to endure such suffering for us is deepened.

Fostering Empathy

Moreover, this tradition fosters empathy and compassion in our students’ hearts. As they reflect on Jesus’ journey, they are prompted to identify with his pain and suffering. Reflecting on his unwavering love and forgiveness, they are humbled by his sacrifice. With guidance, a recognition of the magnitude of God’s love for them can transform into extending greater empathy towards others – leading them to respond in kindness and service.

In a particular way this Lent, my students are focusing on living out this kindness and service. They are trying to “Be the Good” and “See the Good” in others. During our school Mass on Friday, the priest invited them to pray, “Holy Spirit Come,” in those moments when it is most challenging to live out this call.

Meaningful Learning

Praying the Stations of the Cross has many spiritual benefits. It also presents a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary learning. It invites us to explore the historical, cultural, and theological context of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. Natural connections with subjects like history and literature abound. Through these connections, students gain a deeper appreciation for the relevance of their Catholic identity in all aspects of their lives.

Encountering Christ

Praying the Stations of the Cross, creates a sacred space for students to encounter God in a deeply personal way. It’s not merely about reciting prayers; it’s about inviting our students to enter into a relationship with Jesus and to experience his love and mercy for themselves. Praying this devotion in the church adds an extra element of beauty.

Being Transformed

So, this Lent, join me in embracing this sacred tradition as an integral part of your teaching practice. Know that we are sowing seeds of faith and compassion that will bear fruit for years to come. Together, let us journey with Jesus through his passion, death, and resurrection. May we lead our students to encounter the transformative power of his love.

May God bless you and your students abundantly with a blessed and fruitful Lent. As always, I am praying for you and cheering you on!
